General advice:
1. Your dog should always warm up before exercise (walk a little or start with light exercises).
2. Never train on a full stomach or feed immediately after training. Light snacks as a reward are allowed.
3. Increase the demands on your dog slowly so that he is not overwhelmed.
4. Adapt the sport to your dog, considering his breed, age, talent, and size.
5. Allow sufficient breaks during training so that your dog retains enjoyment of the shared activity. Always provide a bowl of water and let him catch his breath briefly after drinking.
6. Note that training should always end with a positive experience.
7. Puppies and adolescent dogs should only be trained after consulting a veterinarian to avoid possible health problems.
Important: Pet and praise your dog during training - this motivates and builds trust.
Assembly instructions:
For assembling the hurdle, choose a flat surface so that your dog can jump straight. Slide the holders with loosened screws over the poles. Place the poles vertically at an inner distance of approx. 120 cm so that the hurdle can be loosely placed. The screws should only be tightened enough to prevent the holders from slipping.
The fitness training can begin:
1. Start the training with a low setting. This prevents your dog from crawling under the hurdle. Slide the hurdle down as far as possible so that your dog can overcome it in a running motion.
2. Repeat the individual training phases several times to ensure that your dog has understood the phase and masters it without problems.
3. When your dog overcomes the obstacle, you should always praise him extensively afterward. Occasionally, you can reward him with a small snack.
4. If you have little experience in dog training or want to participate in competitions during dog training, it is advisable to also train at a dog school or a dog sports club. This way you can avoid possible training mistakes or get tips from an experienced trainer.
The training phases:
You can start the first training phase with a leash or with a second person:
With a leash: Stand in front of the hurdle with your leashed dog. Now run together with him over the obstacle or walk alongside the obstacle while your dog overcomes the hurdle alone.
With a second person: The assistant stands with your dog in front of the hurdle. You stand behind the hurdle and lure him with a toy or snack so that he runs towards you.
If this works easily after several attempts, you can perfect the first training phase by continuing without the assistant or by letting go of the leash.
If your dog also masters this successfully, you can start the second training phase. Stand in front of the hurdle with your dog, point to it, and walk towards the hurdle with your dog. Use a command before the jump, such as "Hopp" or "Jump".
For the third training phase, move a few meters away from the hurdle with your dog. Run towards the obstacle with him. Give the command to jump while your dog jumps over the hurdle and you walk past the obstacle. To make the training a little more difficult, you can set the hurdle a little higher in between and increase the speed.
If your dog enjoys training with the hurdle, you can challenge him anew with a hoop (item no. 3208-TRXI). This is an agility device that allows your dog to practice more precise jumps.
